CARING FOR YOUR JEWELS
Your jewels are made to be worn and lived in.
Silver will tarnish. Brass will deepen and change. Gold will pick up marks. Textured surfaces will soften in places with wear. That’s part of the life of the piece.
A little care will keep them looking good for years.
EVERYDAY CARE
Put your jewellery on last and take it off first.
Perfume, hairspray, lotions, chlorine, salt water and household cleaning products can all affect metals and stones over time. Take your pieces off before swimming, showering, exercising or cleaning.
When you’re not wearing them, keep your jewellery somewhere dry and store pieces separately where you can to help prevent scratches and tangles.
SILVER, BRASS + GOLD
Recycled sterling silver naturally tarnishes and can be polished back to a brighter finish.
Brass develops a deeper, richer patina as it’s worn. Contact with skin and clothing also naturally burnishes the surface, so the areas you touch most can become smoother and brighter over time.
Some people may notice a temporary green mark on the skin when wearing brass, particularly in warm weather or when the skin is damp. This is a normal reaction between the copper in the brass and the natural oils, salts and moisture on your skin, and will usually wash away easily.
Gold is more resistant to tarnishing, but it will still collect fine marks and change subtly with wear.
For everyday cleaning, a soft jewellery polishing cloth is usually all you need. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, particularly on pieces with stones, oxidised areas or intentionally textured surfaces.
STONES
I use natural and rough stones for their colour, shape and character. Inclusions, irregular surfaces and variations are part of what makes each one individual.
Some stones are cast directly into the metal, becoming part of the surface and structure of the piece. Others are set after casting.
Avoid hard knocks, chemicals and sudden changes in temperature, particularly with rough or included stones. I don’t recommend ultrasonic or steam cleaners for Stacey Jayne pieces.
If you’re ever unsure how to clean a particular piece, get in touch.
REPAIRS + REFRESHING
Jewels are meant to have a life.
If one of your Stacey Jayne pieces needs repairing, resizing, cleaning, polishing or refreshing, get in touch. Where possible, I’d much rather help keep a piece in your life than see it left unworn in a drawer.
Wear them. Let them pick up a few stories.
